About Murphy's Pub

On May 18, 1981, a year after Mt. St. Helen's blew, Seattle's first Irish bar opened: Murphy's Irish Pub. That's right. We've been around for more than thirty years. When Chris Barnes and Dan Cowan originally opened Murphy's, it stood where Starbucks stands today, a half a block to the east (a Radio Shack stood on the corner of 45th and Meridian, where Murphy's is today). Dan left shortly after (and went on to open The Tractor Tavern in Ballard), while Chris slowly built a Seattle institution. For years, its stage was host to the nationally syndicated Sandy Bradley's Potluck, a sort of Prairie Home Companion of Seattle, featuring traditional old-time American music, ragtime and blues to movie cartoon sound tracks and novelty songs. Being the first Irish pub, it managed to log a few firsts along the way: the first bar in Seattle to start a St. Patrick's Day tradition, the first bar in Seattle to pour micro brews from the tap (Redhook opened in Fremont in 1982), and first in the hearts of its patrons all the way. On February 12th, 2015, Murphy's Pub reopened under new management and ownership. The new crew is Phil and Chelley Bassett, and Eamonn Davey. After the much needed facelift, you'll find that Murphy's is still pretty much the same: a bar in the Irish tradition, where you can chit chat with friends over a Guinness or Murphy's and other great Northwest beers, dine on great tasting food, listen to some live music a few nights a week (Irish music jam session on Mondays), and just relax after a long day.

We had a spirited game of trivia on Tuesday night at Murphy's. Our first place team, This is more complicated than I thought, snagged a double-or-nothing in the first round, securing a big lead for the rest of the game and continued to play consistently high-scoring rounds. Team Name (2nd place) cleaned up in the fashion round (see their fashion-culture poses in the adjacent photo -- team of four). All of the teams performed very well in the Junior-photo round and the California round. Nice job to all!

See you next week 🙂   --Quizmaster Max

It was a phenomenal night of King Trivia this Tuesday at Murphy's Pub and I had an excellent time filling in for Quizmaster Max!

Badsss Bitches went double or nothing TWICE and earned an impressive 40 points in the last two rounds alone! They certainly earned their first-place victory! Finishing in second place, Baby Cobra had a successful double or nothing in round 6 “The Kids are Alright” and correctly matching the sidekick to the children’s television show. In third place, Mary Poppins Yall also aced round 6 earning double points!

One team, who will remain anonymous, was playing trivia for their first date. We all feel invested in their relationship now and hope they return for their second date next week. 🙂 We're cheering for you guys!

Join us next week for another amazing week of trivia at Murphy's Pub at 7:30PM!

Your Quizmaster,

Whitney

Murphy's was abuzz with trivia spirit. A Whole Lot of Bull jumped into the lead in Round 6, winning a double-or-nothing with their knowledge of guitar players! The Bad Ass Bitches earned second place by playing a really steady game with consistent high-scoring rounds. Don't Be Shellfish, a dynamic duo, snagged third place and was the only team to earn 10 points in the Guess-Who? Round. Other honorable mentions go to Comey-ing and Going who hit a double-or-nothing in Round 1, and Comb Me, Mommy who named the most correct sitcoms in the very challenging final round. Nice job, to all the players who participated in trivia at Murphy's on Tuesday. See you next week 🙂

All the best, -Quizmaster Max
