As a Quizmaster you absolutely become invested in the teams that come back week after week. I have come to love some of the enormous teams that win a lot like the Mild Stallions, Pacific Coast Dog, or Counter Intelligence, but I have also developed an affinity for some of the underdogs who come week after week.

One team that I like to cheer for is Uncomfortably Dumb. This is a much smaller team with only 2 or 3 people, compared to the teams of 10+ that often come to Brouwerji West. Uncomfortably Dumb hadn't played in a few weeks, but they came back to trivia this week and were stronger than ever. They were the underdog going into the game with only 3 people, and their game started out a bit rocky with several rounds of being middle of the pack. Then in classic inspirational underdog sports film fashion they double or nothinged round number 6 and began to rise through the ranks and they ended the game with third place! I was so excited to see this team place and finally get rewarded for their diligent attendance throughout the last year. In second we had Triple Dipper, which is also a smaller team with a very cute little mascot (see pictures). And in first we had Counter Intelligence!

I left trivia this week feeling totally inspired by Uncomfortably Dumb's third place victory. You are not Uncomfortably Dumb at all!

The people of Brouwerji West are smart. I knew this, I have always known this, but tonight I was reminded just how smart this crowd really is. Tonight, not only did people know the answer, the crowd went one step further and was able to elaborate on the answers. All night I had people coming up to me sharing facts that connected to the trivia questions. For example, I learned all about the history of Empiricism from a couple of teams and found out that one person is a direct relative of John Locke. I learned that the painter of American Gothic never officially said whether he was depicting the farmer's wife or daughter in the painting, but the model has always said that she was posing as the farmers daughter, I even learned all about nautical terms and what they mean. I am grateful for this job because I get to learn so much.

The teams that may be the best teachers tonight were Hey You, Beer Me who got 1st place, and Pacific Coast Dog, Mild Stallions, and Awareness Spectrum Narcotic who all tied for 2nd. We had to do a tie breaker for second place and Mild Stallions ended up in 2nd, Pacific Coast Dog ended in 3rd, and Awareness Spectrum Narcotic ended in 4th. Hey You, Beer Me had an impressive lead right up to the very end and easily took first. I still say that their trick was that they had a birthday on their team. Happy Birthday Patty, good work being the team's good luck charm.

As for best/most creative wrong answer of the night, I am going to have to go with The Lame Dumbinators who said that Bobo: Testicle Thief was a Ben Affleck movie.

Also a fond farewell to Robert, who normally works Trivia nights but informed me that he got a promotion and will no longer be serving drinks on Wednesday nights. Darn you Robert for being so good at your job and moving up in the world! I will miss you as I am sure all of the other trivia folks will.

Keep teaching me Brouwerji West and I will keep the trivia questions coming!

Everybody knows that in Trivia there is an art to knowing the answers, but in my opinion sometimes an even more impressive art is making up an answer when you don't know it. I will show you what I mean by letting you peek behind the curtain into some of the creative answers I got this week at trivia.

One common and hilarious trick that trivia competitors often employ is to give as much information as they can when they don't know the answer. Usually this is in the form of "That one guy who..." Some examples of this from trivia this week are "The guy that graduated from Berkeley" or "The guy no one remembers".

The other strategy is to go balls to the wall with a totally creative answer based on the info given. Some hilarious examples of this were in Round 7 when a team was trying to write the members of One Direction, but didn't know the answers so they came up with fun names that combined the Beatles and Fruit: "John Lemon, Ringo Strawberry, Orange Harrison". Another team that couldn't remember the name of the One Direction members put "Benedryl Cucumber". Still a different example of creative answers happened in Round 2 when teams were trying to identify the logo for Full Throttle. One team said "Harry Potter Energy Drink" and another said "I-Drive-A-Lifted-Pick Up Truck-With-Sexy-Lady-Mud-Flaps-Energy Drink".

None of these answers were correct, but they made me laugh much harder than the correct answer would have, thus proving my point that there truly is an art to making up an answer. Thanks to Cat Earth Society, Counter Intelligence, Sister Sister, The Squidwards, and Help Me, Help Me, I Don't Know Where I Am for the laughs.

Some teams that didn't have to make up answers because they already knew them were Hey You, Beer Me who took first place, Pacific Coast Dog who took second, and Hella Vella who took third. I was especially impressed to see Hey You, Beer Me in first because they had such a small team compared to many of the teams that come to Brouwerji West, not to mention that they have a birthday coming up!

If these creative answers keep coming perhaps I will start giving an award each week for most creative/hilarious answer. Regardless of whether they are right or wrong let's keep the answers coming Brouwerji West!
